Do you need a way to make practicing the diphthong oi and oy patterns more fun? Check out this interactive diphthong game that can be used with Google Slides™!
I created this game to help my students practice sorting words during remote learning, but it’s also perfect to use as a digital activity in the classroom! I’m excited to share how it works with you.
Reviewing diphthong oi and oy patterns
It is best to use this game after you have introduced the oi and oy sounds, and practiced reading and sorting words with these patterns. I use the key words “boy” and “coin” to teach these patterns. I’ve created posters that I use when I’m in the classroom. {These are available as part of my Printable Diphthong oi, oy Word Sort Set.} The digital interactive game begins by reviewing these key words and their spelling patterns.
Independent practice
Next, the students will see a series of words. They have to read the word, then decide if the word follows the diphthong “oi” or “oy” spelling pattern. Then, they need to click the picture of the boy or the coin to see if they are correct.
Feedback for students
One of the things I love about this game is that students will receive instant feedback on whether they selected the correct pattern! The next slide will let them know if they were correct or incorrect, then prompt them to move on to the next word, or give them an opportunity to go back and correct their mistake.
One thing to note, is that this game is not self-grading. Instead it gives students an opportunity to practice independently without pressure. After students have had sufficient time to practice these patterns, I would follow up with a independent sorting activity as a formative assessment.
