What will this school year look like?
If you’re anything like me, this meme pretty much sums up how I’m feeling about this upcoming school year.
The idea of teaching virtually, returning to the classroom, or having to make the choice of what I’m doing with my own kids freaks me out! Can we just fast-forward to when things go back to normal??
Planning for teaching in the digital world
Trying to plan for this school year hasn’t been easy. I knew I needed to step up my virtual game. And that I was waaaay behind in this, lol! When schools shutdown in the spring, I spent time learning Google Classroom and began experimenting with creating interactive lessons using Google Slides.
I’ve always wanted to learn those things, but between teaching, lesson planning, reviewing data, my own kids crazy schedules, and well, LIFE, who has the time?
But this has been the summer of learning Google Apps for me. Since my family’s schedule has pretty much gone from 100 to 0, I don’t have much going on at all. Instead, I’ve been learning the ins and outs of creating digital resources, so I can design activities to use with my intervention students.
And maybe I’ll use them with my own kids too – who knows, I may be homeschooling them too!
(But PLEASE! Don’t make me homeschool my kids again!)
Anyway…Are you looking to try digital resources?
Even if we go back to school face to face, digital platforms are here to stay.
With all the unknowns, we have to teach our babies to use digital tools, because chances are we will not be in the school buildings all year long.
That’s if we even start in the buildings at all.
If you’re ready to try an interactive Google Slides activity, download my free Digital Short Vowel Word Sorts. The students simply drag and drop the words into the correct column. And it’s super easy for you to open their submitted assignment and grade them!
There are five sorts included – one for each vowel sound! You can easily assign the word sorts through Google Classroom. If you’re unfamiliar with Google Classroom, step-by-step directions are included in your download to walk you through assigning the activities!
Did you try these sorts out, and love them? I have individual sets of digital word sorts for each vowel sound, plus digital sorts for other phonetic patterns, in my Teachers Pay Teachers store! Check them out by clicking on the image below.

Best wishes for a successful school year!
